Le Grand Voyage
Weekender Duffle · Tanneries du Puy black Negonda · Hermès HCP Group · suede-lined
Le Grand Voyage is the bag the maison would itself travel with: large enough for four nights, small enough that it does not need to be checked, and made of a leather that becomes more characterful, not less, with each trip. The silhouette is intentionally reserved — a single rolled handle on each side, a centred zip closure, a flat bottom with four protective brass-plated feet, and the maison mark struck on a single oval keeper at the handle base.
Negonda, the leather, is at the centre of the piece. It is one of the most desired calfskins in fine maroquinerie, used by the great house that owns the tannery for its most prized travel bags. The deep, irreproducible perpendicular grain runs down the centre of the back of each hide, and is cut by the atelier so that it runs vertically across the body of the duffle, centring the maison mark on the strongest line of the leather.

Tanneries du Puy is part of the Hermès HCP Group and has tanned high-end calfskin since 1946. Negonda is its flagship article — a naturally shrunken calf where one hide can lose up to 40% of its size in tanning, producing a deep grain that cannot be embossed or imitated. The calves are alpine-raised, where fewer insects mean cleaner hides, and only the densest skins are accepted into the Negonda lot.

The maison mark is solid 18k gold, struck on the centred keeper at the base of the handle attachment. The zip is YKK Excella with a custom solid-brass plated 18k gold puller. The feet (four), the strap clips, and the buckle for the detachable strap are gold-plated solid brass to a 2.5 micron specification. The plated brass is warranted against tarnish for ten years; the gold mark indefinitely.
Negonda is robust by virtue of its dense grain. Wipe with a dry cloth after travel. Avoid prolonged rain — the leather will accept a few minutes of weather, but not a downpour. Once or twice per year, a single application of a neutral leather cream on a soft cloth will keep the leather supple. Store in the dust bag with the maison's stuffer pillow in place.
