Le Tansu
Chest Rig Harness Bag · Himalayan Crocodile · CITES-certified · solid 18k gold · suede-lined
Le Tansu — named for the joinery of the Japanese stepped chest, a piece of furniture composed of equal modules — is the maison's chest rig in Himalayan crocodile. The four cardinal points of the maison mark are echoed in the four D-rings of the harness; the bag itself is built in four flat planes, cut from a single skin and matched at the seams so the scale runs continuously across every panel.
Himalayan crocodile is the title given to the rarest grade of white-belly Niloticus, prepared at a tannery whose name is held by the maisons it supplies. The skin is hand-graded for the alpine gradient — pale cream at the centre, fading to soft grey at the edges of each scale — and only the top quartile of skins meet the threshold the atelier accepts. CITES-certified. Each piece is registered to the original owner.

Niloticus crocodile is the African crocodile of the Nile basin; the Himalayan grade is the very small fraction of the global Niloticus harvest where the belly scales come up white-cream rather than the more common warm tan. The atelier sources only from CITES-licensed farms in southern Africa whose welfare standards exceed the legal minimum, and only from skins graded at Top 1 — meaning no insect bite, no scuff, no scar that would interrupt the gradient.
The full Himalayan story is told in the Mythic tier of the Leather Compendium.
All visible hardware on Le Tansu is cast and finished in solid 18k gold — not plated, not vermeil. The chest plate carries the maison mark inset and bezel-set; the harness adjusters, the four cardinal D-rings, and the buckle tongues are individually milled at the bench. The total mass of gold per piece is approximately 38 grams. Each piece is registered to its original owner, and the gold is warranted indefinitely.
Crocodile is robust at the scale and delicate at the seams. Wipe with a dry cloth; never wet, never solvent. For deep conditioning, the atelier performs a single annual treatment at the studio. Avoid prolonged contact with skin oils on the white-belly panels — these are the rarest part of the skin and are sensitive to staining. Store flat in the included silk dust bag, in the original box, away from direct sunlight.
All ATELIER ZEN-Ō pieces carry a lifetime atelier care guarantee — re-edging, re-stitching, hardware replacement, and full restoration are performed at the studio at no additional cost for the original owner. Inquire at info@atelierzeno.com.
Each piece leaves the atelier in a presentation that is itself a small piece of work — assembled by hand, sealed by hand, and intended to be kept by the owner alongside the piece it carries.

Le Tansu is cut, stitched, and finished entirely at the atelier in the United States. The skins are imported under CITES permit and matched in-house. The gold is set by the maison's bench-jeweller. The full provenance — tannery, lot, CITES permit — is recorded on the authenticity card.
The story of the maison's origin, including the four-pointed mark that gives the house its name, is told in Issue Nº 02 of the journal.
